How to Create Photo Grid Collages Offline Using FastStone

Looking for a simple way to create photo grid collages offline without uploading hundreds of images? FastStone Image Viewer offers an excellent solution with its Contact Sheet Builder feature that lets you create beautiful photo grid collages right on your computer.

Why Create Photo Grid Collages Offline?

While searching for ways to create photo grid collages, I found mostly online options that required uploading numerous images. This isn’t practical when dealing with 100+ photos due to time constraints and privacy concerns. Fortunately, FastStone Image Viewer provides a perfect offline alternative.

Using FastStone Image Viewer to Create Photo Grid Collages

I had previously used FastStone Image Viewer before moving to FastStone MaxView, but wasn’t aware of its Contact Sheet Builder capability. This tool, typically used for creating proof sheets, works wonderfully for producing grid collages with the right settings.

Step-by-Step Guide to Create Photo Grid Collages

For best results, use images of the same dimensions. Here’s how to set up your photo grid collage:

Step 1:Calculate your sheet size based on image dimensions
Step 2:Set sheet margins to zero
Step 3:Determine your grid layout
Step 4:Adjust spacing between images
Step 5:Generate your collage

Optimizing Your Photo Grid Collage Settings

If your original images are 1024 by 768 pixels, set up the sheet at four times this size (4096 by 3072) for a high-resolution final product. Since the sheet’s resolution is a multiple of the image dimensions, your photos will cover the sheet completely.

Pro tip: To determine the ideal grid layout, take the square root of your total image count. For 429 images, the square root is about 20.7, so a 20×21 grid would work well.

Fine-tuning Your Photo Grid Collage

Remove all sheet margins by setting them to zero. Then decide how many images to include in your grid. For example, a 12×12 grid with the dimensions mentioned above would make each image approximately 341×256 pixels in the final collage.

You can also adjust spacing between images to create borders or have them touch seamlessly. For a clean grid look, set spacing to zero.

// Sample calculations for grid layout
Original image size: 1024 × 768 pixels
Sheet size: 4096 × 3072 pixels (4× original)
For 12×12 grid:
Each image in collage: ~341 × 256 pixels
For 20×21 grid (429 images):
Each image in collage: ~205 × 146 pixels
