Automating the Deal Hunt: Introducing Bargain Bilby

If you have tried shopping online in Australia lately, you know the drill. Retailers constantly run massive clearance sales where the actual discounts are practically invisible. Between tracking prices and opening a dozen browser tabs, finding a genuine bargain feels like a second job.

Keeping up with clothing, tech, and gear for three growing kids aged eight, ten, and twelve means I am always looking for ways to stretch the budget. I got tired of the manual grind. I wanted a way to cut through the marketing noise and see straight down to the raw numbers.

So I built a solution.

Over the last few months, I have been writing a custom web scraping engine using Python, Scrapy, and Playwright. The goal was simple. I wanted an automated tool that silently checks the major Australian retailers in the background, calculates the real discount percentages, and serves up the results on one clean page.

The result is Bargain Bilby.

It is a completely free, data driven aggregator that pulls live clearance and sale items from places like Amazon, Myer, The Iconic, and Chemist Warehouse. There are no sponsored placements or annoying popups. It is just a massive table of deals that you can filter by exact discount, price range, and category.

If you want to find shoes that are at least 70 percent off, you can filter for that instantly. If you are looking for heavily discounted warehouse books or sporting goods, the data is right there.

I originally built it to scratch my own itch, but it has grown into a genuinely useful tool that is saving us real money. I am continuously tweaking the backend and adding new storefronts to the scraping loop as I go.

If you want to beat the retail algorithms and stop paying full price, head over to Bargain Bilby and have a look around. Test out the category filters, try searching for your favorite brands, and let me know what you think. I am always taking requests for new Australian stores to add to the site!
